A street in the Buduburam Camp. Well project in Liberia, May, 2010.
Founded in 2006, Hearts for Africa is a Christian based non-profit organization that helps those in desperate need in Ghana and Liberia, West Africa, by showing the love of Christ in a tangible way through Word and Deed.
Hearts for Africa first started when Marsha and Jackie were in Accra, Ghana in February, 2006 for adoption reasons. They had heard about the Buduburam Liberian Refugee Camp before and decided they should visit on their first Sunday in Accra. They spent several hours with the local people at a church that Sunday morning. What an experience to worship with their African brothers and sisters! God softened their hearts immediately and they knew that He had brought them there for a higher calling, not just as tourists. Upon arriving back home and settling with their families, they remained true to their promise of sending help. Friends and family donated funds here and there and their first major fundraiser was in December, 2007. God has truly blessed their obedience to Him. They're just moms that have husbands and children with a heart for Africa! Some of our programs at the camp since then have included food and water programs, small businesses, trade school, Bible school, elementary and high school sponsorship, urgent medical care, and other necessary projects. 100% of every dollar raised through regular fundraisers was donated to the camp.
Hearts for Africa had originally directed its focus on providing relief programs for the Liberian refugees who are living at the Buduburam Refugee Camp. Since the ongoing gradual closing of this camp, God has led us to redirect our focus to include Liberia. In 2009, Hearts for Africa had sponsored a Christian school in Monrovia, Liberia. The school and the church are the same building, called IFEM (International Freedom Evangelistic Ministry) Christian Academy. The school is from Kindergarten to Grade 6 with about 150 students crammed into the one little building with no dividers between the grades. HFA purchased Bibles for each student at the school, Language, Math, Science, and Social Studies textbooks for every grade and some copy books. The students were provided with a hot food lunch every Friday at the school. In addition to all this, we were able to provide funds for the school to put on a muchly needed new roof. By the grace of God, we were able to bless this little school in this small way and now they are able to function more effectively. At Christmas time, 2009, we were able to use our funds to demonstrate the love of Chirst by blessing many poverished families in Liberia with gifts of rice, chickens, blankets, shoes and cooking utensils. This year, 2010, some of our projects will include the construction of a few wells, Bible Study education for the people we sponsor in Liberia, and possible future plans to help construct a children's village near Monrovia.
Hearts for Africa continues to raise funds on a regular basis and operates under a 0% overhead. All monies raised will be directly spent on the constant evolving needs in Liberia and Ghana, such as food and water programs, trade and Bible schooling, child sponsorship, discipleship and Bible classes, urgent medical care, or other projects and needs, wherever the Spirit of God leads us. Each person traveling on our annual missions trip and each person involved in the day to day functions of this ministry covers their own costs. Our primary purpose is to bring the Word of God to these people by showing them the love of Christ through these projects.
We are located in Abbotsford and Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada.
Thank you to everyone who is partnering alongside us. May God richly bless all of you!
