Founded in 2006, Hearts for Africa is a Christian based non-profit organization that helps those in desperate need in Ghana and Liberia, West Africa.
Hearts for Africa first started when Marsha and Jackie were in Accra in February, 2006 for adoption reasons. They had heard about the Buduburam Refugee Camp before and decided they should visit on their first Sunday in Accra. They spent several hours with the ACFI (African Christian Fellowship International) Church that Sunday morning. What an experience to worship with their African brothers and sisters! God softened their hearts immediately and they knew that God brought them there for a higher calling, not just as tourists. They came home, got settled with their families and were true to their promise of sending help. Friends and family donated funds here and there and their first major fundraiser was in December, 2007. God has truly blessed their obedience to Him. They're just moms that have husbands and children with a heart for Africa! Some of our programs at the camp included food and water, small businesses, trade school, Bible school, elementary and high school, urgent medical care, and sponsorship. 100% of every dollar raised through regular fundraisers was donated to the camp.
Hearts for Africa had originally directed its focus on providing relief programs for the Liberian refugees who are living in Buduburam Liberian Refugee Camp located in Accra, Ghana. Since the ongoing gradual closing of this camp, God has led us to redirect our focus to include Liberia. This past year, Hearts for Africa had sponsored a Christian school in Monrovia, Liberia. The school and the church are the same building, called IFEM (International Freedom Evangelistic Ministry) Christian Academy. The school is from Kindergarten to Grade 6 with about 150 students crammed into the one little building; there are no dividers between the grades and very few to no textbooks for the students. The teachers there are all volunteers, so there is large turnover. There are currently 7 teachers who teach there whenever they can, as they also work at 3 or 4 other schools or other jobs to earn income for their families. Most of these teachers have minimal formal education, therefore the quality of education for the students depends on the education of the teachers. HFA purchased Bibles for each student at the school, Language, Math, Science, and Social Studies textbooks for every grade and some copy books. The students were provided with a hot food lunch every Friday at the school. In addition to all this, we were able to provide funds for the school to put on a muchly needed new roof. By the grace of God, we were able to bless this little school in this small way and now they are able to function more effectively.
Hearts for Africa continues to raise funds on a regular basis and operates under a 0% overhead. All monies raised will be directly spent on the constant evolving needs of our sponsored students in Liberia and at the Buduburam Camp, or other projects and needs, wherever the Spirit of God leads us. Each person traveling on our annual missions trip and each person involved in the day to day functions of this ministry covers their own costs.
We are located in Abbotsford and Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada.
Thank you to everyone who is partnering alongside us. May God richly bless all of you!
